Australian Technical College Newsletter

As the class of 2006 head towards their finals exams, Year 10 students will be facing the prospect of another two years of high school, trying to choose their future academic options and attempting to imagine their own future career path.

The Australian Technical College - Perth South may be able to provide a viable alternative to students interested in the skilled trades, especially students who might be feeling restless in the conventional school system, but who might flourish under more practical tuition in an environment that will make them feel like part of the workforce and not a high school kid.

One of the many benefits of finishing the West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) at ATC - Perth South, apart from the change of routine and a real different approach to learning, is the curriculum is designed to fast-track students through to the first year of an apprenticeship in either the Building and Construction or the Automotive industry at the same time as achieving their WACE.

If this is the style of education for a young person you know, urge them to attend one of our remaining information sessions. The sessions are informative and provide all the necessary details for students thinking about what they want to do next year.

Our last session was extremely popular and our enrolment numbers are creeping up to capacity level, so it is important that students act soon and attend one of these sessions.

The sessions will be held on the following dates:

Wednesday November 1st

Fleur Fraeme Pavilion, McDonald Avenue, Padbury

5.30pm to 6.30 pm

Monday November 6th

The Agonis, 2232 Albany Highway, Gosnells

5.30pm to 6.30pm

Thursday November 9th

Employment Plus Office, 6 Dewar Street, Morley

5.30pm to 6.30pm

To register a place at one of the sessions or for more information on the Australian Technical College - Perth South, you can call 1300 303 677 or log on to www.atcperth.edu.au

Returning to work Success Story

When an eye injury forced Phil Roberts to quit his job as a warehouse manager, things were looking grim.

Phil, of Kinross, lost the sight from his eye from the injury, which forced him out of the workforce for more than a year.

He spent another year trying to make his way back into the industry, but his age and injury were major barriers.

“I spent a year on the dole and that was really difficult,” he said.

“When I attended interviews, employers saw my injury first and forgot about my experience.

“I was told a number of times that I was number two on the list and I had just missed out.

“I have no doubt my age and injury had a lot to do with those decisions.”

Phil, 48, is now back in full-time employment after completing a Certificate IV Training and Assessment course at Jobs West, a leading training provider in the warehousing industry.

He works at Jobs West as a Training and Placement Officer, sharing his wealth of knowledge with young people looking to become part of the warehousing industry.

“The job is fantastic and I enjoy working with the students,” Phil said.

“It’s like I have been given a second chance – I wish I had found something like this years ago.”

Jobs West is now offering a second chance to other unemployed people over the age of 45.

It will pilot a new program next month, Return To Work, which aims to improve employment opportunities for mature-aged job seekers.

The free course will provide job seekers with all the necessary skills to return to the workforce.

Jobs West is a not-for-profit community organisation, established 30 years ago, which delivers training through collaborative arrangements with industry and government agencies.
