When an eye injury forced Phil Roberts to quit his job as a warehouse manager, things were looking grim.
Phil, of Kinross, lost the sight from his eye from the injury, which forced him out of the workforce for more than a year.
He spent another year trying to make his way back into the industry, but his age and injury were major barriers.
“I spent a year on the dole and that was really difficult,” he said.
“When I attended interviews, employers saw my injury first and forgot about my experience.
“I was told a number of times that I was number two on the list and I had just missed out.
“I have no doubt my age and injury had a lot to do with those decisions.”
Phil, 48, is now back in full-time employment after completing a Certificate IV Training and Assessment course at Jobs West, a leading training provider in the warehousing industry.
He works at Jobs West as a Training and Placement Officer, sharing his wealth of knowledge with young people looking to become part of the warehousing industry.
“The job is fantastic and I enjoy working with the students,” Phil said.
“It’s like I have been given a second chance – I wish I had found something like this years ago.”
Jobs West is now offering a second chance to other unemployed people over the age of 45.
It will pilot a new program next month, Return To Work, which aims to improve employment opportunities for mature-aged job seekers.
The free course will provide job seekers with all the necessary skills to return to the workforce.
Jobs West is a not-for-profit community organisation, established 30 years ago, which delivers training through collaborative arrangements with industry and government agencies.
